Pickett/Big South Fork

Pickett CCC Memorial State Park is the first Tennessee state park built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1934.  Pickett State park offers beautiful scenery, hiking trails, and a unique natural bridge over the lake.  We will be staying in a rustic cabin in the park and there are many easy trails around the cabin area.  On the way to Pickett, we will visit the Mennonite community, Muddy Pond, and enjoy a delightful lunch at the general store.  The general store offers delicious fresh baked goods, cheese,  along with pottery and quilts.  Next door there is a wood working and leather shop with a variety of products from leather purses,  saddles, to maple rockers.  Since we will be in the area in the fall we will see sorghum made.  After we leave Muddy Pond we will wind our way over to  Tennessee’s first winery,  Highland Manor, located on the original estate of Mark Twain’s father.  A great place to stop for a taste an excellent Muscadine wine, as grown by Twain’s father.

During the weekend, we will hike in Big South Fork to see the beautiful Twin Arches, a geological wonder and Indian Rock House, home to the Paleo Indians 12,000 years ago.  These trails are relatively easy (stairs are involved in the Twin Arch hike) without much elevation gain.  The fall foliage should be beautiful.  If time permits and our energy holds out, we will have lunch on the trail and visit either Slave Falls or Angel Falls.

Sunday, we will leave Pickett and head east to Frozen Head State Park where we will hike to waterfalls amid beautiful fall colors and wildflowers.   We should arrive back in Nashville by late afternoon.

This trip is rated easy.  Bring your camera because the entire trip will be full of photo opportunities.
