Chickasaw State Park land and forest once belonged to the Chickasaw Indian Nation. We will visit Pinson Mounds Archaeological Area and walk among 400 acres of huge Woodland Period Indian Mounds built 2000 years ago.
We will hike across Dismal Swamp where union soldiers marched to build a levy for the Memphis Charleston Railroad during the Civil War. We will walk along a boardwalk over the swamp and through huge Cypress trees surrounded by knees to a fire tower with a panoramic view across Dismal Swamp Civil War Earthworks and railroad guard post built by the Union soldiers. Many civil war battles were fought over this railroad trestle including the second largest battle in West Tennessee with 1,000 Confederate and Union casualties. Many waterfowl call this swamp home, including the Great Blue Heron and Asprey.
Sunday, we will leave Chickasaw and visit Tennessee’s largest state forest, Natchez Trace State Park for a short hike and lunch. The park is named for the western alternative route between Nashville and Natchez, Mississippi used during the 18th and 19th century. We should arrive back in Nashville by late afternoon.
This trip is rated easy. Bring your camera because the entire trip will be full of photo opportunities.
