Roan Mountain Cabin Trip – Have you always wanted to hike on the Appalachian Trail? Well now is your chance. Our day hikes will take us through Carvers Gap along the AT running through the wide-open spaces, waving grass and alpine wildflowers of the Roan Mountain Balds along the Tennessee/North Carolina border. We will stroll through the beautiful Rhododendron Garden as we hike the AT. If time permits, we can visit the site of the historic Cloudland Hotel (built in 1880’s) near Roan High Bluff. From a visitor to the hotel, we will “come up out of the sultry plains to the land of the sky - magnificent views above the clouds where the rivers are born.”
On the way to our cabin, we will stop by the oldest town in Tennessee, Jonesborough. There are several antique shops and a couple of tea rooms where we will enjoy lunch. We will also travel to Boone, North Carolina to the unique 1883 Mast General Store and drink a Nehi out of the old cold drink machine and snack on familiar candy we ate as a child. Mast has everything from hiking socks to cast iron skillets. This trip is rated easy to moderate. Bring your camera because the entire trip will be full of photo opportunities.
Roan Mountain is on the Tennessee/North Carolina border so this will be a rare 4 day trip to accommodate the long drive. A detail schedule will be sent to registrants. For questions call 615-443-3371 or email wildernessfoxes@yahoo.com. |
